The Gryphon’s Guide To Voting

Allyson Barrera ‘27

Voting is one of the most fundamental rights of citizens in a democracy. Being prepared is key, especially if you are an out-of-state voter. It is a privilege to be able to vote and have the power to shape your government and influence policies that will impact your everyday lives. By participating in elections, voters contribute to the future of not only their communities but also the country as a whole. This guide covers the essentials to ensure you are ready for Election Day.

How to Register to Vote

To participate in any election, you must first be registered. In New York, your voter registration form must be submitted online at least 25 days before the election. You can register in several ways:

  • Online (easiest way): Visit the New York State Board of Elections website to fill out the voter registration form.

  • By Mail: Download and mail in the National Voter Registration Form, or request one from your local Board of Elections.

  • In Person: Register at any DMV or Board of Elections office.

Voting Out of State

There is a good chance that if you are reading this, you are an out-of-state student here at Sarah Lawrence —but that does not mean you can not have a say in the upcoming elections. Voting is still important, whether you are casting your ballot in your home state or New York. No matter where you are from, you have options to ensure your voice is heard.

Absentee Voting

If you are attending school out-of-state, you can either register to vote in your college state or vote absentee in your home state. Absentee voting is a convenient way to participate in elections without being physically present at the polls. For college students who are away from their home state, this is a convenient option. Request an absentee ballot from your local election office, fill it out, and send it back. Keep in mind that deadlines vary by state, so make sure to apply early to ensure that your vote counts.

Election Day:

What To Bring

If you are a first-time voter, bring a valid form of ID such as a driver’s license, utility bill, or any government-issued document that shows your name and address.

Where to Vote

Find your polling location on the Board of Elections website or by contacting your local office. Polling places in New York State are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day—Nov. 5, 2024.

How to Vote

Once at your polling place, sign in with a poll worker, receive your paper ballot, and head to a private booth. After marking your ballot, feed it into the optical scanner, which will count your vote.
