Campbell Sports Center is home of the Gryphons, our NCAA Division III athletes but, there is so much the building has to offer to the rest of the students as well. If you are an athlete or simply enjoy working out, the gym has you covered. The cardio and strength equipment areas carry an array of machines such as Cybex exercise bicycles, ellipticals, treadmills, free weights, and so much more. If racquetball is your thing there is a squash court to play by yourself or with a friend!

There are also dance studios where classes like Pilates, Zumba, and so much more take place. Sarah Lawrence does have physical education requirements and some of these classes like pilates or dance will take place at the Sports Center. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved in other areas of fitness like intramural sports. They host events frequently and often have prizes or rewards. Keep an eye on the Instagram page @slcintramurals for updates on all things from dodgeball nights to seeing MLB games.

Kevin Cole who has been working at the Sports Center for three years says, “Students are surprised by the studio. They have been enjoying the mirrors there and the dancers are excited about the studio spaces. My personal favorite thing here is ping pong.” If you like more low-intensity workouts try the track on the upper level of the gymnasium, or the pool with dedicated free swim hours students are encouraged to participate in. When speaking with Kevin Cole he also was sure to mention even if athletics aren’t your style, using the spaces in the Campbell Sports Center does not need to be for just athletics. “Just because a space is dedicated to something doesn’t mean it has to be.”

Additionally, there are now two smaller rooms filled with more free weights, exercise bikes, and plyometric boxes. Just make sure if you are planning on using these rooms to be sure to follow the rules of returning your weights, not filming others without consent, wearing appropriate gym attire, not bringing food or drinks (just bottled water), always disinfecting when you’re done using equipment and use the equipment at your own risk (it is recommended to use a spotter as well.) These two rooms are across from the cardio and strength area which are all located on the upper level. The new areas are designed for free weights making the cardio and machine area more exclusive and separate.

While you are stopping in Campbell you should look at the trophy display cases to see our past teams and their accomplishments. Sarah Lawrence has a rich history in multiple aspects, not just academics. Being a multihyphenate is a school value, so come appreciate our students’ other assets too. “One thing I find valuable about the Sports Center is the opportunity to interact with athletes. Any preconceived notions can be eradicated here and you get to meet really cool people you might not see otherwise.” Kevin Cole mentioned. Don’t forget that fall sports are currently in season and you can support the athletes on campus! Come to the Campbell Sports Center to watch a game of volleyball, or you can swing by a soccer game at Fleming Field or a tennis match behind Andrew’s Court. The campus keeps a wide array of things to offer that you might not know you love.
